Things change and you change as time passes. The resume is an image of your personality and competency, and it becomes out of date over time. Skills may become obsolete, projects may lose value, and many additions may become overdue. While you will need to update it, here are a few quick fixes:
- Change the Font:-
This is comparable to a quick makeover. Change up your fonts from the standard Times New Roman and Verdana to Calibri, Cambria, Georgia, Arial, and others. But keep in mind that readability is important. Check that your resume format is readable, legible, and clear. Change the font of your entire document by pressing Ctrl+A.
- Quick Hint:-
For the best presentation, printed materials use sans-serif fonts (Helvetica, Arial, Calibri) for headlines and serif fonts (Times New Roman, Garamond Pro) in the body.
- Mission Statement:-
For starters, remove the words "objective" and "aim" from the headline. And, as the headline, begin with your statement directly. Create a few good, simple, and understandable statements for various situations. Bring some strength to it by using active and positive words.
- No Address Is Required:-
If you haven't already, remove the address from the personal information section. It is one of the most common pieces of information that is unnecessary in a professional profile (resume). Furthermore, with today's digital scanning, it is not recognised by bots and may result in unnecessary errors. However, some academic resume formats may require an address, so double-check first.
- Include Your LinkedIn URL:-
Giving your LinkedIn profile URL, as important as it is, is a wise move in today's world. Because the resume will be printed, it is best to shorten the URL by either generating a shortened link or editing it in your profile, or both.
- Section 'Take Care of Skills':-
As with skills, they may become obsolete for the profile or level up to a more desirable one. With time and practise, new skills can be learned. And much more is possible. Examine your skills section and update as needed.
- Action in a Pack:-
Examine the roles and responsibilities section of your resume format carefully. You will almost certainly come across some passive and unenthusiastic verbs such as 'taking care of,' 'acting as,' and'responsible for,' to name a few. Instead, if they are appropriate for your profile, use active words such as 'led,"managed,' 'chaired,' 'controlled,' 'executed,' and 'headed'. Include new experiences as well.
- Demonstrate Your Development:-
You may have worked for a company for a longer period of time, but you have most likely ignored to demonstrate your advancement and growth. So, in your profile, clearly show your promotions, multiple roles, and positions of responsibility. Growth is the most important aspect of any resume format, and it may even point to changing the resume format to a more targeted one.
Using this seven-step method to make quick changes will give your resume a new look. The introspection required for a few points will also assist you in determining your own career bearings. Also, when the time comes, it will be easier and less complicated to update the resume with new information. So why not do it right away?
